CityHub Enters Germany With Berlin Hotel at Leipziger Platz
Dutch pod-hotel operator CityHub will open its first German property at Berlin's historic Leipziger Platz, extending its app-driven, low-labor format into Europe's largest travel market.
CityHub has announced its expansion into Germany with a new hotel at Leipziger Platz in central Berlin, marking the Dutch hospitality brand's first property in the German market.
The site sits at one of Berlin's most historic addresses. Leipziger Platz, a square laid out in the early 18th century, sits directly adjacent to Potsdamer Platz and carries the layered urban history of the German capital — from its pre-war commercial prominence to its decades as wasteland along the Berlin Wall's death strip and its post-reunification reconstruction as a mixed-use district.
For CityHub, the location choice signals the brand's intent to compete in Europe's largest national travel market rather than test secondary cities first. Berlin has ranked among Europe's most visited capitals in recent years, drawing a mix of leisure tourists, business travelers and a persistent budget-conscious segment that CityHub targets.
CityHub has built its concept around compact, technology-enabled sleeping units — private pods — paired with communal spaces and a self-service model that trims labor costs relative to conventional limited-service hotels. Guests check in via app or kiosk, control their pod's lighting and climate from their smartphones, and buy drinks and snacks from automated stations. The model, first deployed in Amsterdam and later expanded to Rotterdam and other European cities, positions the brand between hostels and budget hotels on price while keeping occupancy-driven economics closer to the hostel end of the market.
The Berlin project represents the company's stated growth strategy of extending the CityHub footprint beyond its Benelux base into major European capitals. Germany, with its dense rail connectivity and high volume of intra-European city-trip travel, has been a logical next step for the brand's expansion planning.
Details disclosed so far frame the project as a conversion of space at the historic square into a CityHub-format property. Premier Construction News, which first reported the announcement, lists the development among its tracked European hospitality construction projects.
The choice of Leipziger Platz carries practical advantages beyond brand visibility. The square connects directly to Potsdamer Platz's transport interchange, placing the hotel within walking distance of the Brandenburg Gate, the government quarter and the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe — anchor attractions for the city-break travelers who make up CityHub's core demand.
For Berlin's competitive set, the arrival adds another tech-forward budget operator to a market where pod and micro-hotel formats have been gaining share against traditional hostels and midscale hotels. Operators in this segment compete primarily on location quality per square meter and labor efficiency, and CityHub's automated service model is designed to hold staffing leaner than a comparable limited-service property.
No opening date, room count or investment figure has been disclosed publicly at this stage. CityHub has indicated the Berlin property will follow the format of its existing European locations once complete, with further project details expected as the development advances through planning and construction.
