Fontanini Foods LLC of McCook, Illinois, is recalling 2,320 pounds of raw, frozen pork breakfast sausage that may be contaminated with clear, hard plastic, the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service announced.

The affected product was produced on June 23. The recall covers 10-lb. cardboard box cases labeled "Fontanini PORK SAUSAGE LINKS" with "ITEM 393" printed on the box and "PACKED ON 06/23/2026" on the shipping label. Each case bears establishment number "EST. 6944" inside the USDA mark of inspection.

The sausage shipped to distributors in California, Florida, Michigan, and Nevada for use in food service establishments, including restaurants — a distribution footprint that puts the burden of compliance on commercial kitchens rather than retail shoppers.

Fontanini discovered the problem after receiving two customer complaints reporting clear, hard plastic in the sausage. FSIS has confirmed no reports of injury or adverse reactions tied to consumption of the product.

The agency is concerned that some product remains in food service and restaurant freezers. FSIS is urging food service establishments and restaurants not to serve the sausage and to throw it away or return it to the place of purchase. Operators who have purchased Fontanini breakfast sausage should check box labels against the item number and pack date before the next service.
