Sydney Brewery will relaunch its Surry Hills microbrewery, bar and bistro on Friday 2 October, unveiling an extensive refurbishment alongside a refreshed food and drinks menu at the venue attached to Rydges Sydney Central.

The redesign pushes the eight-year-old site toward a more contemporary feel while retaining its original character. It includes updated furnishings, a new pool table, and a large new screen for live sport — infrastructure aimed squarely at the venue's positioning as a neighbourhood gathering point rather than a pure brewery taproom.

Bar Manager Ewan MacKechnie says the refurbishment was designed around the suburb itself.

"Surry Hills has such a strong personality and sense of community, and that's something we really wanted to embrace," says MacKechnie. "The refurbishment has given the venue a new feel, but at its core it's still the brewery our regulars know."

MacKechnie flagged the venue's catchment logic explicitly: a spot for an after-work beer, a shared meal, watching the game, or a pre- or post-match stop for events at the Sydney Cricket Ground and Allianz Stadium — both within walking distance of the Albion Street-adjacent precinct.

New beer, new menu

The relaunch doubles as a product debut. A new Hoppy Golden pale ale, brewed by Danielle McDonald and Nate Holgersson, pours for the first time at the venue on opening day. It is built on Taiheke and Simcoe hops from New Zealand, delivering fresh lime, passionfruit and citrus flavours, and joins Sydney Brewery's existing list of beers and ciders available on tap and in the bottle.

The food menu has been rebuilt around refined Australian pub favourites with a share-plate format. Menu anchors include Sydney Rock Oysters with cider mignonette and steak frites with chimichurri — dishes that pair the venue's own cider production directly into the food offer.

Hotel-backed footprint

The Surry Hills venue sits within Sydney Brewery's wider footprint, which spans Alexandria, Rozelle and the Hunter Valley. The brewery marked its 20th anniversary in 2025, making the Surry Hills site — at eight years old — one of the newer assets in the group's portfolio.

Rydges Sydney Central General Manager Brittany Peacock-Smith says the upgrade reflects the neighbourhood's energy, character and people.

"We've put a lot of care into creating a space that feels fresh while staying true to what locals and our regular guests already love about it," says Peacock-Smith. "We can't wait to welcome everyone back."

Opening-day push

To drive opening-day traffic, the venue will give the first 100 guests a complimentary smash burger with any Sydney Brewery purchase from 4pm on Friday 2 October — a capped, low-cost giveaway designed to fill the room quickly in the competitive Surry Hills hospitality strip.

With sport-focused infrastructure, a resident brewing team launching new product on site, and a hotel operator backing the refurbishment, the relaunched venue is positioned to compete for both local regulars and match-day crowds through the summer season.
