Melbourne's Yiaga Takes 50 Best's One to Watch Award for 2026
Hugh Allen's Fitzroy Gardens fine diner Yiaga has won the 50 Best Restaurants' One to Watch Award for 2026, just a year after opening — Australia's second win after Sepia in 2015.

Melbourne fine diner Yiaga has won The World's 50 Best Restaurants' One to Watch Award for 2026 — barely a year after opening its doors in Fitzroy Gardens.
The restaurant, led by Vue de monde alumnus Hugh Allen, opened in 2025 and drew fast attention from local and international industry watchers for its considered culinary approach. The One to Watch Award recognizes an emerging restaurant with the potential to become a leading name in the future.
Australia has now claimed the prize twice. Martin Benn and Vicki Wild's Sepia won it in 2015, more than a decade ago.
What did the chef say?
"We certainly never anticipated this in our first year," Allen said. "I've been extremely lucky to have a team beside me who are, in my opinion, some of the best hospitality professionals in the world, and it means a lot to see the wider industry feel the same way."
He signaled that the recognition is a starting point rather than a finish line. "We are only a year open, so there's still so much planned and dreamed about for Yiaga's future," Allen said. "For now, we will keep pushing, keep progressing, making the experience here as fun, innovative and delicious as possible."
How does the restaurant build its identity?
Yiaga's menu strategy centers on championing local, sustainable and Indigenous ingredients to create dishes that reflect Australia — a sourcing-driven positioning rather than a purely culinary one. That commitment extends to the build itself: the dining room is made almost entirely of local materials, with the work of artisans featured throughout the space, from the tables to the walls.
Rachael Hogg, Senior Content Editor for The 50 Best Restaurants, framed the win in similar terms. "Yiaga represents an exciting new chapter for Australian dining, bringing together thoughtful hospitality, exceptional cooking and a deep understanding of the country's natural larder, in a stunning setting," she said.
"Set among the gardens' century-old elm trees, the restaurant has created an experience that is both ambitious and connected to its surroundings," Hogg added. "This recognition celebrates everything the team has achieved so far, and we are really excited to see the concept develop."
What comes next?
The 2026 50 Best Restaurants Awards will be announced at a live ceremony in Lima, Peru, on 4 November. Australian representation on the list has been thin of late: last year, Josh and Julie Niland's Saint Peter was the only Australian restaurant featured, landing at no.66 on the extended 51-100 list.
For Yiaga, the One to Watch designation positions the Fitzroy Gardens operation as a likely candidate for future list placement — and gives Allen's team a global platform as it heads into its second year of service.
