Donnacha Hurley, most recently Chief Executive of Limerick Chamber, has been appointed General Manager of the four-star Limerick Strand Hotel. MHL Hotel Collection partners John Lally and Paul Higgins made the appointment. Hurley brings more than 25 years of industry experience across Ireland, the UK and Switzerland.

The move follows a period of transition for the business. Hurley succeeds the late Stephen O'Connor, whose leadership the hotel described as leaving a lasting legacy among colleagues, guests and the wider industry. The announcement did not specify when O'Connor left the role or how long the transition lasted.

What does Hurley take charge of?

He will oversee all operations at the riverside property, including:

  • The award-winning River Bar & Restaurant
  • Extensive conference and events facilities
  • Energize Health Club

The announcement offers no revenue figures, occupancy data or headcount for the hotel. The scale of the task therefore remains undefined.

What is his track record?

A native of Ballykeeffe, Co. Limerick, Hurley trained at Shannon College of Hotel Management, including a year in Zurich. He completed the InterContinental Hotel Group graduate programme, then progressed through management roles in Manchester and London. Senior positions followed at Holiday Inn, Tate Modern, Jurys Doyle Hotel Group and Whitbread plc.

He returned to Limerick in 2007 as Opening General Manager of the Limerick Marriott Hotel. In 2008 he took charge of the Absolute Hotel Limerick, where he spent more than 17 years. That tenure carried the business through the recession, a refinancing and its sale in 2025. A sale is an exit, not a valuation of management. But 17 years of continuous leadership through a downturn and a refinancing is a concrete record in a sector where general managers rarely last five.

At Limerick Chamber he led advocacy on housing, infrastructure and preparations for Ryder Cup 2027, the tournament staged at Adare Manor. He also served as President of Limerick Chamber, Board Member of Discover Limerick DAC and National Council Member of the Irish Hotels Federation.

What did the two sides say?

Hurley framed the move as a return. He said: "Hospitality is where my heart is. My time with Limerick Chamber was a privilege, but leading The Limerick Strand Hotel felt like coming home." He pointed to investment in Limerick and the Ryder Cup as growth levers for the hotel and the region, while naming team support and guest experience as his immediate focus.

Lally and Higgins said: "He brings an exceptional combination of hospitality expertise, commercial acumen and deep knowledge of Limerick and the wider Mid-West region. His proven track record in hotel leadership, team development and business performance makes him ideally placed to lead the hotel."

The statement is boilerplate owner language. It does not commit to capital investment, renovation plans or headcount changes at the property.

What comes next?

Hurley holds an Executive MBA (Hons) from the University of Limerick, an MSc in Hospitality Management (Hons) from TU Dublin and a Diploma from Shannon College. His stated vision centres on people, service excellence and sustainable growth — broad terms without measurable targets. The Ryder Cup at Adare Manor in 2027 gives the region, and this hotel, a fixed deadline to convert inbound demand into rate and occupancy gains. Whether Hurley's chamber-level advocacy translates into property-level results will show in the first full financial year of his tenure.
