John Boos & Co. has promoted Patrick Smith to president of a newly created commercial group, one of two strategic divisions the foodservice equipment manufacturer formalized in a leadership restructuring announced this week.

Smith, previously vice president of commercial foodservice sales, brings more than two decades of sales and commercial leadership experience to the role, including over 15 years in the foodservice equipment industry. As president of the commercial group, he will lead Boos Steel and oversee both sales and production. The company credits his tenure with forging strategic partnerships and strengthening relationships with key sales channel partners and chain-account customers — the dealer and multi-unit accounts that drive volume in the foodservice equipment business.

The reorganization is not a single promotion. It splits the company into two dedicated divisions, Commercial and Consumer, each with its own executive leader, backed by shared services.

Who now runs what?

  • Patrick Smith — president, commercial group. Promoted from VP of commercial foodservice sales. Leads Boos Steel, sales and production. Over 20 years of sales and commercial leadership experience, more than 15 of them in foodservice equipment.
  • Mark Adkison — president, consumer group. An industry veteran joining the company, he leads the consumer business of both John Boos & Co. and JK Adams.
  • Greg Nuxoll — interim CEO and CFO. Promoted to lead the executive team through the new growth phase. He has 30 years of finance and management experience, including more than three years as John Boos & Co.'s chief financial officer.

In his expanded role, Nuxoll will lead overall strategy, growth and the evolution of the John Boos holding company, including its divisions and strategic brands JK Adams and BK Resources.

Why the two-division structure?

Nuxoll framed the split as a way to sharpen focus as the company's customer base has changed. "While we continue to honor our woodworking and steel manufacturing heritage, the way we serve and meet the needs of our customers has evolved," Nuxoll said in the announcement. "By establishing two dedicated divisions, Commercial and Consumer, backed by shared services, we can focus on our expertise and accelerate innovation under a strong leadership team."

The structure acknowledges a practical reality for manufacturers that serve both professional kitchens and home cooks: the two channels sell through different partners, at different price points and with different service requirements. The commercial side sells through foodservice dealers and chain accounts; the consumer side, which now includes JK Adams, sells at retail. Dedicated presidents for each, with back-office functions pooled in shared services, is a common way mid-sized manufacturers scale without duplicating overhead.

What does this change for operators?

For foodservice buyers, little changes immediately: the same brands — John Boos, Boos Steel, BK Resources — remain under one holding company, and Smith, a known figure to channel partners and chain accounts, now controls both sales and production on the commercial side. That consolidation of authority could shorten the path between what dealers and chain customers request and what the factories in the commercial group build.

The interim tag on Nuxoll's CEO title signals a search or a further leadership decision to come. For now, the company is betting that separate commercial and consumer leadership, backed by shared services, will speed product development across its woodworking and steel manufacturing base.
