J. Alexander's Opens Second Arizona Restaurant in Gilbert

J. Alexander's opens its second Arizona restaurant in Gilbert this November, hiring 90-100 staff under SPB Hospitality's plan to deepen its Phoenix-area presence.

J. Alexander's will open its second Arizona restaurant this November at 2192 SanTan Village Pkwy. in Gilbert, roughly a year after the brand entered the state with its Chandler debut in 2025.

The upscale, polished-casual chain is staffing the new unit with 90 to 100 front- and back-of-house employees. Hiring is already underway, and the buildout signals owner SPB Hospitality's intent to keep pushing the J. Alexander's flag deeper into the greater Phoenix area.

"We're excited to build on the momentum of our Chandler restaurant with a second Arizona location in Gilbert," said G.J. Hart, CEO of SPB Hospitality. "This expansion strengthens our presence in the greater Phoenix area and reflects our continued focus on growing J. Alexander's in markets where we see strong long-term potential."

What does the opening change for operators in the market?

For Gilbert's competitive set, it means one more full-service, wood-fired steak player operating seven days a week near the SanTan Village retail corridor. The menu leans on hand-cut steaks, signature salads and sandwiches, handcrafted cocktails and an extensive wine list. A private dining room adds a business-lunch and celebrations revenue stream that many casual competitors can't match.

For SPB Hospitality, the move is a measured, one-unit step rather than a blitz. Back-to-back openings in Chandler and Gilbert suggest the operator is testing Arizona density rather than chasing rapid expansion. That approach fits a brand whose economics rest on higher checks and polished service, where site selection matters more than unit count.

The labor picture is the immediate operational test. Filling 90 to 100 positions in a tight Phoenix-area service market takes weeks of recruiting, and the company has front-loaded that effort before the November opening.

How the hiring push works

J. Alexander's is running two recruiting channels simultaneously:

  • Walk-in interviews at its hiring site, SpringHill Suites Phoenix Gilbert, 1801 S. SanTan Village Pkwy., Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • A dedicated hiring event on Wednesday, Oct. 28, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., with the hiring site open before and after the event.

The scale of the hiring effort — nearly 100 people for a single restaurant — underscores the labor intensity of the polished-casual format. Servers, bartenders, line cooks and support staff all need to be trained on the brand's service standards before doors open, which is why recruiting started well ahead of the debut.

What comes next

If Gilbert performs the way Chandler has, the Phoenix metro could see further J. Alexander's growth. Hart's language about "markets where we see strong long-term potential" points to continued, selective expansion of the brand under SPB Hospitality's ownership.
