Google AI Mode Now Books Hotels; Independents Lose Visibility
Google AI Mode completed bookings for ten chains on October 1 — the day a price-feed mandate expired and stripped independents of ad visibility. A 27,360-answer study finds them 8x more invisible to AI.

Google AI Mode began completing hotel bookings for ten major chains and OTAs in the U.S. on October 1 — the same day Google let expire the price-feed mandate that had guaranteed independent hotels ad placement alongside OTA results. The coincidence is structural, not accidental. Hotels that maintained live connectivity gained a transaction channel; hotels that relied on free inclusion lost their visibility at the exact moment AI began routing paid bookings.
Are Morch's Barcelona study of 27,360 AI travel answers gives the disparity its hardest number yet: independent hotels are eight times more likely than chains to receive no AI mention at all. Hotel websites supply only 7% of what AI says about a property. The other 93% comes from OTA listings, review platforms, and editorial media — sources chains have funded for years and most independents have not systematically maintained.
What did Ronson's live tests find?
Terence Ronson of Pertlink tested AI agents from the traveler's side, running Claude and ChatGPT across seven major hotel groups. Marriott, IHG, Accor, and Choice Hotels allowed agents to move from search through to checkout. Hyatt, Hilton, and Wyndham produced inconsistent results depending on the agent and the booking route.
The inconsistency carries direct commercial cost. An agent that fails to complete a booking does not retry the same property; it routes the traveler to a competitor's interface. A chain that is agentic-capable on one route but not another is effectively closed to a share of AI-mediated bookings without knowing it. Ronson's independent methodology matters here. Most AI booking claims arrive in vendor press releases. Traveler-side testing produces evidence no marketing announcement can replace.
What does the 7% website figure mean?
The number confirms what AI tools actually do: they do not search hotel sites to answer questions about hotels. They answer from sources they already trust. Independent operators who assumed a well-built website would carry their AI presence now have a measured refutation.
The wider picture, documented by Markus Busch at hospitality.today and reconline AG, shows AI Mode shifting from research interface to live transaction channel across the ten partner integrations, which include major OTAs, Marriott's direct booking system, and several chain-level connections.
What are the supporting signals?
- Benjamin Golson of Cogwheel Marketing & Analytics found all six major brands — IHG, Hilton, Marriott, Hyatt, Wyndham, and Choice — moved from AI pilots to production systems across search, booking, and revenue management within twelve months, a pace most independents have not matched.
- Sébastien Felix of Influence Society identifies ChatGPT Ads, live in 31 European markets, as a pre-search discovery channel for lifestyle and luxury independents with clear identity signals.
- The AIHA released a free Hotel AI Visibility guide covering KPIs, self-assessments, and AEO strategy, following its agentic protocols workbook.
What else moved this week?
Adam and Larry Mogelonsky of Hotel Mogel Consulting argue the guestroom, not the spa, is the highest-impact venue for longevity amenities, proposing phased capex on sleep optimization, circadian lighting, and recovery tools where uptake is passive and marginal cost per key is lower than standalone wellness build-outs.
TFE Hotels became the first group in Australia and New Zealand to have internal leadership programs accredited for university credit across eight institutions, with 86% of recent graduates promoted.
In appointments, Richard Cooke was named General Manager at Dorchester Collection, Christophe Delabarre joins Marriott International as Hotel Manager at Autograph Collection Hotels, and Vaishali Bali was appointed Director of Marketing at Hyatt Centric.
In development, Minor Hotels signed Anantara Retreats Darjeeling as its India debut, IHG opened Holiday Inn Resort Luang Prabang Naluang Hill in Luang Prabang, and Whitbread began demolition on a second Cork Premier Inn ahead of construction.
The Barcelona data suggests the visibility gap is not a future risk but a measured condition. For independents, the question is whether free tools arriving now can close a disparity that scaled AI booking has already begun to monetize.
