Choice Hotels CHRO Patrick Cimerola to Retire at End of 2026
CHRO Patrick Cimerola will step down in December 2026 after 25 years; Choice Hotels has launched a search while he shifts to a special advisor role for the transition.
Choice Hotels International (NYSE: CHH) announced that Chief Human Resources Officer Patrick Cimerola will retire at the end of 2026, capping a 25-year tenure with one of the world's largest lodging franchisors.
Cimerola joined the Rockville-area company in 2001 and has led its people strategy and leadership development through major inflection points: CEO transitions, the integration of large acquisitions, and the company's response to the COVID-19 pandemic. He will remain CHRO through December 2026 and then serve as a special advisor to ensure a seamless handover while the company conducts a comprehensive executive search for his successor.
The announcement carries operational weight for a franchisor whose asset-light model depends on consistent corporate culture across a network of independent owners. Choice franchises more than 7,500 hotels representing nearly 650,000 rooms in 46 countries and territories, spanning 22 brands from economy to upper upscale, midscale and extended stay.
Leadership transitions defined the tenure
Cimerola's tenure spanned the company's evolution, as Chairman Stewart Bainum, Jr. framed it, from "a mid-sized lodging franchisor into a global industry leader." Bainum credited him as "the driving force behind our people strategy" and said he "fostered a resilient culture that supported our growth."
"Patrick has been a trusted advisor by my side through some of the most transformative moments in our company's history," Bainum said. "He has been a guiding light for our culture and our people. I have worked with Patrick for decades and proudly watched him grow into the strong leader he is today."
President and CEO Dom Dragisich emphasized that Cimerola's influence reached beyond the HR function. "Patrick's impact on Choice Hotels extends far beyond human resources," Dragisich said. "For 25 years, he has helped shape the culture, values, and leadership principles that have enabled our company to grow and thrive. His steady leadership, sound counsel, and deep commitment to our people have left an enduring mark on this organization."
Under Cimerola's leadership, the company strengthened its standing as an employer of choice and earned external recognition for its workplace culture and its commitment to developing associates — a factor that matters in hospitality's competition for corporate and property-level talent.
A long runway for succession
The transition timeline gives Choice roughly two years before Cimerola steps away entirely. He will continue as CHRO through December 2026 before moving into the advisor role, and the company has not named an internal successor, signaling an open search process.
Cimerola reflected on his quarter-century with the franchisor. "It has been a privilege to represent Choice Hotels and work alongside so many talented associates during the past 25 years," he said. "I am incredibly proud of what we have built together and grateful for the relationships and experiences that have defined my career. Choice Hotels has always been a place where people are welcomed, valued, and respected, and I am confident the company is well-positioned for continued success in the years ahead."
The successor will inherit a people organization at a franchisor of scale — one responsible for corporate staff supporting more than 7,500 franchised properties and a brand portfolio that spans nearly every lodging segment. The extended transition window suggests Choice aims to avoid the leadership gaps that can follow long-tenured executive departures, with Cimerola's advisory role bridging his replacement's onboarding through 2027.
