Chili’s 30 Million Margaritas Anchor a Wider Price Ladder

Chili’s sold nearly 30 million Margaritas in 2025, the most among restaurant chains. A $6 core, 25% frozen mix and $10-to-$12 premiums widen the trade-up path.

Chili’s Grill & Bar sold nearly 30 million Margaritas in 2025, more than any other restaurant chain, and is poised to sell even more in 2026. The disclosed price ladder runs from a $6 core to $12 premium, with frozen drinks now accounting for 25% of Chili’s Margarita sales.

Whether that traffic produces stronger economics remains unclear. Available figures omit the company-operated versus franchised unit mix, average check, product cost, labor cost, and restaurant-level margin. Volume alone does not establish profit.

Why has the Margarita endured?

Frozen Margaritas appeared on Chili’s original menu in 1975, giving the drink a generation-long association with the casual-dining chain. Chili’s began rotating Margarita of the Month in 2018. It launched a premium frozen line in 2025 and added the Margarita of the Month Club in February 2026.

Mary Ellen Scott, senior marketing director, said: “Guests are coming to Chili’s for ‘Margs,’” and added, “It’s part of who we are and part of the experience.” The statement connects a mass-market drink with brand recognition.

The program now combines liquor tiers, frozen formats, digital rewards, merchandise, and seasonal presentation within one recurring menu event across the chain. The figures do not prove that the cocktail alone caused traffic; they show exceptional sales penetration.

How does a $6 drink drive repeat visits?

The Margarita of the Month stays at $6 and changes every month. Scott described the proposition as value, newness, and fun, with candies or swizzles used to vary the experience. February’s club lets guests track monthly purchases, collect digital badges in a virtual passport, and buy related merchandise. Scott said diehard fans try to collect them all.

By keeping the headline price at $6 while adding novelty, collectible badges, merchandise, and top-end options, the chain appears to use the drink as both a traffic driver and a route to a larger beverage basket. Chili’s has not disclosed club enrollment, repeat-visit lift, incremental beverage spend, or whether registered purchases improve restaurant margins. Its participation claims remain unquantified.

Where does the trade-up begin?

Guests also trade up to $12 Presidente and Don Julio Margaritas and to the frozen line introduced in 2025. The premium frozen menu includes three higher-priced builds.

  • $10 Patrón Frozen Marg: Patrón Silver, triple sec, lime juice, and agave syrup, offered in strawberry, mango, blackberry, dragon fruit, and spicy flavors.
  • $12 Flamingo Freeze: The Patrón Frozen Marg swirled with Tito’s Handmade Vodka, shaken with Owen’s Prickly Pear.
  • $12 Arctic Drift: Malibu Coconut Rum, pineapple juice, and blue Curaçao swirled with the Patrón Frozen Marg.

Scott called the frozen share huge and said it filled a gap. She also said guests arriving for the monthly drink shop across the full menu.

Those options create a visible path from a $6 entry drink to $10 and $12 products, although the figures omit unit-level margins, company sales mix, and restaurant returns. The data supports a traffic-and-basket thesis, not a quantified sales lift.

What did the first trade-up test show?

In September, Chili’s offered its first trade-up on the monthly Margarita: a cherry limeade version for $10, optionally frozen and with Patrón. Scott said the chain is eagerly waiting to analyze the option before deciding whether to repeat it. Scott disclosed no uptake, sales, or margin results.

A successful repeat could raise the monthly order’s price while preserving the $6 entry point, but uptake, frequency, preparation cost, and restaurant returns all remain undisclosed. Each build has a different disclosed recipe, but no preparation-time, labor-cost, or product-cost data is available.

Why keep Margarita at the center of a full bar?

The $6 Margarita remains the brand’s main focus even as premium options expand. Scott said Chili’s monitors guest requests and trends, but each concept must remain unmistakably Chili’s.

She said: “We don’t want to jump onto a trend just because it’s something that’s popping off. We need to make sure that it’s right for our customers and right for operations to be able to execute.”

That operating test links brand recognition to execution: a recognizable drink can simplify ordering, while a trend can add complexity without improving the check. Among premium drinks, Don Julio leads. Scott said guests recognize it, want to return for it, and view $12 as a strong price point.

Chili’s also repeats popular recipes, including October’s green Witches Brew: Lunazul Blanco Tequila, blue Curaçao, and Monin Granny Smith Apple Syrup, served with a broomstick swizzle.

What does the wider market context show?

Chili’s operates a full bar, but Scott called Margaritas its flagship and said more options are in the pipeline. The available information identifies no forthcoming concepts, dates, prices, or expected margins.

A related Technomic Top 500 analysis says chain restaurant sales slowed again in 2025 as consumers cut back on dining. The analysis says coffee, beverages and snacks, and chicken thrived, but it does not quantify Chili’s performance or place the casual-dining chain in those growth categories.

The market note offers context rather than a verdict. Chili’s enters 2026 with nearly 30 million prior-year Margarita sales, a $6 traffic price, a 25% frozen share, and a $10 trade-up awaiting analysis.

Any further expansion must be measured against repeat visits, premium mix, average check, product cost, labor, and franchise-level returns. None appears in the available figures.
