Airbnb Ships AI Search Tools Years Behind Priceline, Expedia

Airbnb rolled out natural language search, AI filters and automatic property comparisons in the U.S., years after Priceline, Kayak and Expedia shipped rival AI tools.

Airbnb has launched natural language search by text and voice, predictive AI filters, AI-generated listing descriptions, and automatic side-by-side property comparisons across its homepage and app in the United States — its most substantial consumer AI release to date, and one that arrives well after its online travel agency rivals shipped comparable tools.

The new search box accepts conversational queries by text or voice for homes, experiences and services. Hotels are not included in the natural language search for now.

The company also rolled out AI filters that anticipate user intent. A traveler who types the keyword "baby," for example, will see the system introduce additional filters for "cribs," "playgrounds" and "toys," according to Airbnb.

Search results now automatically generate AI-powered property comparisons in side-by-side displays, along with AI-written listing descriptions.

Late to the party

Airbnb is not a first-mover here. Priceline's Penny chatbot has offered natural language search since 2023. Kayak launched its AI Mode roughly a year ago. Expedia has shipped natural language search on Vrbo and deployed Property Expert and AI Comparison tools on Hotels.com.

Airbnb's bet is that integration beats timing. Unlike rivals that largely confine AI output to chatbot interfaces, Airbnb's AI descriptions and comparisons surface automatically within the standard search flow — every search, not just conversational sessions. Whether that structural difference translates into higher booking conversion or better host occupancy remains to be seen.

CEO Brian Chesky, speaking at Skift Global Forum this month, said Airbnb is rebuilding itself as an AI-native company. He has pledged an agentic AI tool for 2027.

Stays are no longer the whole business

The AI launch landed alongside a broader expansion of Airbnb's services layer. The company now offers meal and grocery delivery in Europe, laundry through Rinse, and baby gear through BabyQuip in more than 60 U.S. cities starting in November. It has added ski rentals in the French Alps and boat rentals in South Florida.

Airbnb also introduced an interactive travel map that lets users share trip plans with friends and family.

Host tools coming this fall

New AI-powered tools for hosts arrive later this fall, including improved dynamic pricing and a multi-listing calendar. Dynamic pricing matters for hosts managing revenue across units; a multi-listing calendar cuts operational friction for operators running several properties.

For Airbnb's host base, the pricing tool is the most economically consequential item in the pipeline — algorithmic rate-setting has become a baseline capability on competing platforms.

What it means

The strategic question is not whether Airbnb was late, but whether its embedded approach — AI woven into existing search behavior rather than gated behind a bot — outperforms the chatbot-first strategies at Booking Holdings' Priceline and Expedia. The Skift analysis notes a parallel: Kayak was not a first-mover in metasearch and still built a durable business.

With host-side AI pricing tools due this fall and an agentic booking experience promised for 2027, Airbnb has committed to a multi-year AI roadmap that will test whether integration and distribution scale can offset a two-year head start enjoyed by its rivals.
