Wingstop Scales Proprietary Tech Toward 10,000-Restaurant Goal

Digital sales now exceed 71% of Wingstop's systemwide sales across more than 3,200 restaurants in over 45 countries, and CEO Michael Skipworth is using that platform as the engine for a stated target of 10,000 restaurants worldwide.

Since adopting a digital-first strategy in 2021, Wingstop has built a proprietary technology stack rather than licensing third-party systems. The stack covers digital ordering, technology-enabled kitchen operations, and data analytics that drive menu decisions and personalized customer interactions. The company frames the payoff in operational terms: measurable gains in speed of service, order accuracy, and digital satisfaction scores.

What has Smart Kitchen actually changed?

The AI-enabled Smart Kitchen operating system, rolled out in 2025, has cut average wait times by roughly 50%, with the largest gains during peak dinner dayparts. Skipworth did not hedge on the significance.

"Smart Kitchen has [created] an operational transformation I'm not aware of another restaurant brand achieving at this scale," said Skipworth, who serves as CEO and President. "We are already seeing meaningful operational improvement, particularly during our busiest dinner dayparts."

How does Club Wingstop fit in?

The loyalty program, launched in May, has exceeded internal expectations on guest retention, check sizes, and engagement. Enrollments are pacing 22% above internal targets. Skipworth called it the brand's biggest guest-facing digital milestone, offering a platform for "points, personalization, group ordering, and points sharing."

The program sits inside a broader ecosystem that includes features like Order Tracker and draws on a consumer database exceeding 60 million customers. That database lets Wingstop identify which systems perform best and export the learnings to new markets.

Where is the test-and-scale model working?

Kiosks are the clearest case. Introduced in Paris last year, they now account for a majority of in-store orders there. The company found that kiosk guests spend roughly 50% more time building orders than counter guests, and they spend more money. Younger guests, in particular, explore the menu together without feeling rushed.

Wingstop has since expanded kiosks into Ireland, the Netherlands, and Italy. Singapore runs QR code ordering, and the U.S. click-and-collect model is being introduced across several international markets.

"Insights from digital ordering, restaurant operations, and loyalty engagement can help us identify opportunities, test new capabilities, and apply relevant learnings across markets," Skipworth said.

Is Wingstop a chicken chain or a tech company?

Skipworth has answered this himself, calling Wingstop a technology company that happens to serve chicken wings. His framing ties every investment to measurable system impact rather than novelty.

"Wingstop begins all tech innovation with the needs of our guests, team members, and brand partners, and builds solutions that can create measurable impact across the system," he said.

With the digital ecosystem established, the next phase is scaling it toward the 10,000-restaurant goal, with innovation focused on removing friction, deepening personalization, and making the chain easier to access. Skipworth said technology "can create value across the entire Wingstop ecosystem, from path to purchase to delivery," and that the company will keep testing and scaling tools that improve guest experience, simplify operations, and strengthen returns for brand partners.
