Parkwood American Grille Opens Sept. 1 in Friendswood, Texas

Raz Halili and chef Joe Cervantez opened the 6,400-square-foot Parkwood American Grille in Friendswood on Sept. 1, adding steak, Gulf seafood and Toyosu Market fish to their four-restaurant portfolio.

Parkwood American Grille opened Sept. 1 in Friendswood, Texas, giving the Houston suburb a 4,800-square-foot dining room plus a 1,600-square-foot patio from the operators behind Pier 6 Seafood & Oyster House.

Owners Raz Halili and executive chef Joe Cervantez already run three concepts within a short drive: the James Beard Award semifinalist Pier 6 in San Leon, Fish Company Taco in Galveston and Noah's Ark in Bacliff. Friendswood sits roughly halfway between Houston and the Gulf coast.

Why Friendswood?

"It's a really great community, but there aren't a lot of dining options outside of chain restaurants," said Halili, who grew up nearby working for his family's oyster business. "We wanted to provide the area with a chef-driven, Houston-caliber experience at a great value and without the drive into Houston."

What does that mean in practice? A menu engineered for a broad guest base rather than a single niche — premium steaks, Gulf seafood and pasta under one roof, priced for weekday family dinners and date nights alike.

Menu and sourcing

Oysters anchor the raw bar, as they do across Halili's portfolio. The program also lists shrimp cocktail, crudos and sushi, with select fish sourced from Tokyo's Toyosu Market.

Starters include mini lobster rolls topped with caviar and chicken nuggets with crème fraîche and caviar, sold with a glass of Champagne as a grown-up Happy Meal combo. Bistro items — French onion soup, filet au poivre — sit alongside a burger and a crispy chicken sandwich.

The steak program sources Snake River Farms beef and dry-aged cuts from Flannery Beef, including a wagyu New York strip, a prime dry-aged rib eye and a 24-ounce prime porterhouse.

Cervantez, who formerly led the kitchens at Killen's Steakhouse and Brennan's of Houston, said the Parkwood build differed from Pier 6, whose menu was guided by its coastal setting. Here he wanted a broader menu balancing creative dishes with familiar ones.

Bar program and membership play

Dallas-based Coeval Studio, which also designed Pier 6, built out the space: a curved Cambria quartz bar in custom millwork, a coffered wood ceiling, sea-green porcelain tile, brass accents and caramel leather banquettes. The stone-and-turf patio seats 30 around a fountain.

Local consulting firm Ladies of Libation developed the cocktail list, which leads with Martinis and includes riffs such as the mezcal-based Buenas Tardes with Sichuan pepper, the reposado tequila Chai New Fashioned, and the Mojito-inspired Last Mango in Paris. Five spirit-free cocktails are also listed.

The wine program spans Old World and New World producers, with by-the-glass options, higher-end bottles and several Texas wines. Parkwood is selling private wine locker memberships that include dedicated storage, cellar service and access to exclusive experiences — a recurring-revenue move aimed at the local regular base.

What's next

Lunch service and a happy hour launch soon, and the patio opens as the weather cools. A seafood tower and a rolling Martini cart are in development. "We're having fun," Halili said.

Further out, the operators see growth room: Fish Company Taco is going strong in Galveston, and Halili said he could see that concept doing well in Houston. He also floated a long-term goal of opening an authentic Albanian restaurant grounded in his family background — but for now the team is focused on running its four-concept portfolio.
