Lidl US Recalls Gelatelli Gelato Across 10 Markets Over Listeria

Lidl US is pulling one lot of Gelatelli Coffee & Vanilla Gelato after testing found Listeria. The product reached stores in ten East Coast markets between July 19 and Oct. 15, 2026.

Lidl US is recalling one lot of Gelatelli Coffee & Vanilla Gelato after routine quality testing detected Listeria monocytogenes in a lab sample. The product shipped to every Lidl US store in ten markets over a nearly three-month window.

The distribution ran from July 19, 2026, through Oct. 15, 2026. Stores in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Georgia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Virginia all received the affected lot.

No illnesses have been reported to date, the company said. That matters less than it sounds, because listeriosis has an unusually long incubation period — symptoms can take up to 70 days after exposure to appear.

Which containers are affected?

The recall covers exactly one production run:

  • Product: Gelatelli Coffee & Vanilla Gelato with Coffee Sauce & Cookie Pieces
  • Size: 16 FL OZ (1 PT), clear plastic container with a brown lid
  • UPC: 4 0564897 22458
  • Lot: 085261
  • Best By: MAR/26/2028 — printed on the bottom of the container

That far-off best-by date is the practical problem here. Frozen product sits in home freezers for months, so Lidl has flagged the concern that consumers may still be holding recalled units without knowing it.

What should customers do?

Lidl asks customers to discard the product immediately or return it to any Lidl store for a full refund. No receipt is required, which removes the usual friction point in recall returns.

The retailer initiated the action itself, after routine quality testing caught the pathogen on a lab sample. In other words, this wasn't triggered by illness reports — it was caught upstream, before anyone got sick as far as anyone knows.

Why Listeria is treated seriously

Food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look, smell or taste spoiled, so sensory checks won't catch it. Symptoms of infection can include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache and neck stiffness. Because the illness mimics other conditions, diagnosing it requires specific laboratory tests.

Anyone who ate the recalled gelato should monitor themselves for symptoms over the coming weeks and tell their doctor about the possible exposure if they feel ill.

The risk isn't evenly distributed. Pregnant women, older adults, young children and people with weakened immune systems — cancer patients, for example — face the highest risk of serious illness, life-threatening infection and death. Infected pregnant women may experience only mild, flu-like symptoms, yet the infection can still cause premature delivery, newborn infection or stillbirth.

For a chain that has been expanding aggressively up and down the East Coast, a single-lot recall with no reported illnesses is a contained event. The long shelf life means the practical cleanup will stretch into 2027, as customers gradually find old containers in their freezers.
