Dr. Lo Ka Shui, GBS, JP, received the HICAP Lifetime Achievement Award at the 36th Hotel Investment Conference Asia Pacific in Singapore, capping a leadership career spanning more than four decades.

The conference ran from Oct. 20 to 22, 2026, over three days. The award requires HICAP's planning and selection committee to agree that the recipient is uniquely deserving.

At the ceremony, Lo shared the stage with Langham Hospitality Group Chief Executive Officer Bob van den Oord for a dialogue about his career, the group's legacy and his views on hospitality's future.

Van den Oord said: “We are immensely proud to celebrate Dr. Lo on this richly deserved recognition.”

“For more than four decades, his principled stewardship and long-term perspective have provided a steady foundation for the Group’s growth and evolution. We remain guided by the high standards he has set as we strengthen our brands, invest in our people and pursue the next chapter of LHG’s development.”

What does the lifetime honor recognize?\n

The award recognizes leaders whose accomplishments and lasting contributions have expanded, enhanced and advanced the hotel industry across Asia Pacific and internationally. It also reflects Lo's work across property, hospitality, finance, healthcare and public service.

Jonathon S. Zink, Chief Operating Officer of the Hotel Investment Group by Northstar, said: “We are honoured to recognise Dr Lo’s extraordinary contributions with the HICAP Lifetime Achievement Award.” Zink linked Lo's contributions to generations of industry leaders and to business leadership's positive influence on people, communities and the wider region.

How did a physician become a hotel leader?\n

Originally trained as a medical doctor, Lo earned a Bachelor of Science in Biophysics from McGill University and a Doctor of Medicine from Cornell University. He completed specialist training in internal medicine and cardiology at the University of Michigan Hospital.

His executive path at Great Eagle spans four dated milestones:

  • 1980: Joined Great Eagle Group.
  • 1990: Became Managing Director of Great Eagle Holdings Limited.
  • 2003: Became Executive Chairman of LHG.
  • 2006: Became Chairman of Great Eagle Holdings Limited.

Under Lo, LHG has continued its growth as a globally recognized luxury hospitality company with hotels, resorts and residences across key international markets. His stewardship has adapted the group to changing expectations of global travelers.

The announcement gives no portfolio unit count, revenue, operating margin or labor-cost data. It describes the group's direction, not the economics behind the portfolio.

Where is Langham expanding next?\n

LHG continues to expand in key international markets and introduce its brands to new destinations through two named openings:

  • The Langham, Custom House, Bangkok, scheduled to open in December 2026, will occupy a restored riverside landmark in the Thai capital.
  • The Langham, Venice is also slated to debut, with no opening date disclosed in the announcement.

Lo's leadership philosophy centers on authentic service, innovation and enduring value. The company says that approach supports continued development of its brands and people worldwide.

What recognition has he already received?\n

Dr. Lo's earlier honors include:

  • Gold Bauhinia Star, awarded by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in 2003.
  • Asia Pacific Hotel Industry Conference's Hotelier of the Year Award.
  • DHL/SCMP Hong Kong Business Person of the Year Award.
  • TTG's Travel Entrepreneur of the Year Award.

A respected Hong Kong business leader and civic contributor, Lo advances charitable causes through the Lo Ying Shek Chi Wai Foundation and the KS & Feili Lo Foundation. Their work focuses on early childhood development, education and music. That record of service and philanthropy reinforces the announcement's emphasis on responsible corporate stewardship.

What does the award change for Langham now?\n

The announcement specifies no immediate change to operating or commercial terms. Its practical value is reputational: it reinforces a leadership narrative as Langham adds Bangkok and Venice, develops its brands and invests in people worldwide.

With Bangkok due in December 2026 and Venice slated to debut, Langham's next chapter will be judged by whether that expansion converts a celebrated leadership legacy into sustained performance in new markets.
