Hospitality Financial and Technology Professionals, founded in 1952 and headquartered in Austin, Texas, has named Robert Firpo-Cappiello director of communications and promoted Christina Van Allen to managing editor of Hospitality Upgrade. HFTP says the two moves will “strengthen the organization's communications and publications teams.” Neither appointee appears as a quoted speaker, so their own priorities remain unstated.
The nonprofit supports hospitality finance and technology segments through an international network of members and stakeholders. Its offering includes expert networks, educational resources, career development programs, research, leadership opportunities, conferences and events. Its publications include Hospitality Upgrade, Hotel Online and Clubs Online, alongside industry surveys and research reports. Combined website traffic exceeds 140,000 visitors a month, although the announcement gives no traffic breakdown by title.
Who leads the editorial operation?
Firpo-Cappiello will lead communications strategy across HFTP's publications, digital platforms and industry events, including the flagship HITEC. Van Allen will oversee Hospitality Upgrade, which HFTP calls an award-winning trade publication serving the global hospitality technology community, with Firpo-Cappiello joining the organization as its new communications director. They join Amy Hellen, Hotel Online's managing editor, who brings more than a decade of hospitality experience and a focus on industry trends. The announcement does not specify either role's budget, reporting structure or succession plan. Hellen's existing tenure provides continuity while both appointments expand HFTP's senior media team.
What does Firpo-Cappiello bring?
Most recently, Firpo-Cappiello served as editor-in-chief of Hospitality Technology. He launched a sponsored podcast-style video series, expanded the brand's webinar platform and revamped annual research studies. HFTP says the studies fueled sponsors' thought leadership and sales pipelines, a commercial claim the announcement does not support with revenue or conversion figures. He also spent more than eight years at Arthur Frommer's Budget Travel, rising from deputy editor to editor-in-chief. Under his leadership, the title reached an all-time high of more than 1 million monthly unique visitors. Against HFTP's 140,000-plus monthly website visitors, that is a substantially larger audience, although the measures differ and neither figure establishes profitability. Firpo-Cappiello also builds AI agents and workflows, advises on content that AI systems can cite and helps teams integrate AI into editorial strategy. He has advised media brands, technology companies and foundations on publishing strategy for the AI era. The announcement does not define the AI services he will deliver or their pricing.
What has Van Allen already achieved?
Van Allen's promotion follows her service as HFTP's publications manager. Before joining the association, she was communications manager at Safe Routes, where she owned communications, development and external engagement. She directed national events, drove sponsorship acquisition and grew Safe Routes' digital audience to more than 50,000, while LinkedIn engagement increased by 861% under her work. HFTP says the promotion recognizes her editorial contributions and her commitment to the publication's readership. The announcement provides no subscription, sponsorship or event-revenue figures for either role. It also does not explain how the managing editor role will differ from the publications manager position. HFTP frames the expanded team's mission as “delivering timely, high-quality content” and deepening its global reach. The announcement gives neither promise a measurement or deadline.
What changes for HFTP's media operation?
The enlarged team will work with HFTP's AI Collective on reporting about AI developments shaping hospitality. A global editorial board of technology specialists will advise on a modern news format and a broader global perspective. HFTP does not identify the board's members or a publishing schedule, leaving the scope of that advice open. HFTP also oversees Hotel Online and Hospitality Upgrade. The association maintains offices in the European Union and India. Operationally, HFTP produces international events throughout the year, calls HITEC “the world's largest hospitality technology tradeshow and conference brand,” and oversees the Uniform System of Accounts for the Lodging Industry, known as USALI. That claim about HITEC is HFTP's own, and the announcement supplies no market-share data to test it. Eliza Selig, HFTP's chief marketing officer, handles media inquiries at +1 512-220-4026. The expanded team now needs to turn those priorities into measurable readership and reporting gains, although the announcement provides no targets or timetable.
