Gen Restaurant Group Sells 47 Restaurants to Chubby Cattle for $100M

Gen Restaurant Group sells 47 restaurants to Chubby Cattle Group for $100 million, strengthening its balance sheet while accelerating Chubby's expansion.

Gen Restaurant Group has agreed to sell 47 restaurants to Chubby Cattle Group for $100 million, a deal that hands over almost the entire footprint of one of the country's best-known Korean BBQ chains in a single transaction.

The price works out to roughly $2.1 million per unit across the 47 locations. For a full-service concept with tabletop grills embedded in the operating model, per-unit economics at that level signal a portfolio being sold at scale rather than piecemeal — one buyer, one check, 47 doors changing hands at once.

Gen, which built its brand around interactive Korean barbecue dining, will use the sale to strengthen its balance sheet. That phrase carries weight for a company whose growth strategy until now ran through capital-intensive company expansion. Converting operating assets into $100 million in liquidity gives management room to pay down obligations, return capital, or fund whatever comes next without the drag of running nearly four dozen full-service kitchens.

Chubby Cattle Group, the buyer, takes the opposite side of that trade. The purchase accelerates the growth of Chubby's restaurant operations, adding a national-scale brand to its portfolio in one step rather than through years of unit-by-unit development. Buying 47 restaurants outright removes the time and cost of site selection, buildout, and ramp-up — the slowest and most expensive part of full-service expansion.

What does this change for the operators?

For Gen, the deal converts a physical footprint into balance-sheet strength, shifting the company from an operator-heavy model to one with substantial cash. For Chubby Cattle, it is a leap in scale: 47 additional restaurants and an established brand name arrive together, compressing years of growth into a single closing.

The transaction also signals how full-service expansion is getting done in the current cost environment. Labor and construction costs have pushed per-unit openings higher, making acquisition a faster route to scale than organic development. Chubby Cattle has now demonstrated that route with a nine-figure check.

Watch for the next move on both sides: how Gen deploys its strengthened balance sheet, and how quickly Chubby Cattle integrates and grows the acquired portfolio.
